The GNU/Linux commands alphabet

Display and sound stacks are huge. Control them can be tricky. Here's how to tame them.

• alsamixer set your speakers on fire.
• aplay / arecord -lL to list the devices and PCMs.

• pacmd talk during runtime with the server.

• xbacklight full brightness in the morning but set -50 after dusk.
